Top 5 fixes for: Excel 2013 has stopped working - also works for Word, Powerpoint, Outlook...

Recently I've started encountering a particularly annoying problem with Office 2013. Every time I'd open Excel 2013 under Windows 8, it would crash instantly, leaving me a message: "Excel 2013 has stopped working". I looked around and found a few solutions, but nothing worked for me. Eventually, I managed to fix the problem all by myself. I'm going to describe the steps that I've tried here. Note that this post is also valid for messages such as:
  • Word 2013 has stopped working
  • Powerpoint 2013 has stopped working
  • Excel 2013 has stopped working
  • Outlook 2013 has stopped working
  • Office 2013 has stopped working (insert any other Office tool here).
  • Most of these solutions are also valid for Office 2007 and Office 2010 applications.

Solution 1: change the default printer

This solution fixed all my problems, so I'm going to describe it first. Also it's the simplest! Try this first before anything else, because the next solutions are a bit more complex. What we're doing here is just changing the default printer.

Why does this fix our problem? Because when you open an Office document, such as an Excel spreadsheet or a Word document, the application attempts to communicate with the printer to figure out the margins supported by the default printer. If that communication fails, the application (ie. Excel) crashes. All you have to do is change the default printer. Below is a quick guide to do that.

First, close all open Office applications such as Excel, Outlook and whatnot. Then, go to the "Devices and Printers" window. If you don't know how to open that, just go to the Control Panel and you'll find the "Devices and Printers" applet.

Righ-click on "Microsoft XPS Document Writer", for example, and choose "Set as default printer". Now open Excel again and voila: the document opens fine, and the margins are correctly defined.

Solution 2: start in safe mode, disable add-ins

While the above solution worked for me, I've also experienced add-in problems in the past; some add-ins caused some of my Office applications to crash for no apparent reason. So if the above fix doesn't help you, try this one, it's likely that this will work for you.

What we're going to do here: start Excel (or Word, Powerpoint, Outlook) in Safe Mode so that it doesn't load any add-in potentially crashing the application. Then from the Safe Mode we'll disable add-ins one by one and see if this helped.

To start one of these applications in safe mode, first press the Windows+R key combination to get to the "Run..." window:
In the text box that appears, type one of those commands depending on the application you're trying to fix:
  • Excel.exe /safe
  • Winword.exe /safe
  • Outlook.exe /safe
  • Powerpoint.exe /safe
Next, go to the "File" menu (the colored menu bar at the top left of the application that says "File"). Then in the menu on the left, click "Options". In the options window, click "Add-Ins" at the bottom. You should see a window like this:

At the bottom of this window, there is a "Manage: [_____]" option list. Select "COM Add-ins", and click the button "Go..." that's just on the right. You'll be seeing a list of add-ins:

Make sure all boxes are unchecked, and press "OK". Restart the application normally and see if this fixed it for you. If it did; it's likely that one of these add-ins is causing the problem. Simply repeat this process and re-enable add-ins one by one until you find the one that's causing the issue.

Solution 3: start the application as Administrator

I've read that this solution worked for a couple of people, so I'm reporting the information here; hopefully this will help. Apparently in some cases all you need to do is start Excel/Word/Powerpoint/Outlook as Administrator in order to get permissions to do something on the computer. If you're using Windows 7, right-click the application in the Start Menu and click "Run as administrator". See if this works for you.

In Windows 8, open the Home screen, find the application you're trying to open; right-click it and select "Open as administrator" at the bottom.

Solution 4: repair Office 2013

In some cases, it may just happen that one of the files necessary to the well-functioning of your Office 2013 applications has been damaged, deleted or corrupted after a brutal shutdown for example. So it might be useful to attempt an automatic repair. There's actually an option for that, and here's how to access it.

First, open the Control Panel, then select "Programs and Features". Find "Microsoft Office 2013" in the list, and click the "Change" button at the top:

You will be presented with an option to automatically "Repair" the Office 2013 program files, which might actually help towards fixing your problem.

Solution 5: fully uninstall and reinstall Office 2013

In the most severe cases, the only solution you'll have is to fully uninstall Office 2013 from your computer, wiping it clean of all tracks the programs might have left on your Windows set-up. Rest assured you won't need to do this manually; Microsoft are offering a program for that: an Office 2013 uninstaller. So just open this page-- click here, scroll down until you see this button:

Click it to begin downloading the uninstall tool. Once the uninstall is complete, restart your computer, then proceed to reinstalling Office 2013.

Conclusion

Microsoft did it again: they've managed to make an application suite as unstable as Internet Explorer! And they aren't even providing proper solutions for it, or even fixing the problem at all. If your Office 2013 apps still crash after you've tried all of the above, then sue Microsoft... just kidding, maybe ask for a refund I suppose. Also: if you've heard of any other solution to fix this sort of problem, please post a comment here and I'll see about integrating it in my post.

Followed your directions on removing addins. Worked like a champ! Thank you so much. I just wonder why this was the problem...
Keep up the great suggestions.

I looked further into the problem caused by the addins. The culprit was apparently the ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint used for OCR scan functions. Reading the FAQ about the product shows that it only works on 32bit systems not 64. Interesting.
Thanks again!

Great info. My specific issue was the addin you described. Just a note, I had to type in the entire file path to run safe mode, not just the short command, but everything else worked exactly as described. Thanks again!

None of the methods had worked on my problem with excel. Here what I found on the other forum. That fixed my issue.

"If you are facing issue with office 2013 applications.

Please follow the Instructions.

1)Open the following path.

2)C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\Root\Office15\

3)Look for Osf.dll and rename it to Osf.DLL.Old

4)Close the application.

5)Restart the application."

OMG, finally I can fix my excel crash by following Anonymous' suggestion that post on Dec 16 i.e. rename osf.dll to osf.dll.old.

Many thanks, it's great indeed.

Brilliant Blog! Followed Richard Fitzwater's fix to uninstall the ABBY FineReader app, which comes bundled with my ancient Epson NX125 Printer. Everything working now. Have just procured a Windows 7 computer with Office 2013.

I have done all of these- disabled COMS and AddIns, delete OSF. i don't have ABBY so my default printer is set to XPS,

It is horrible. i called MS and they wanted money to fix it because my warranty is over. screw that
Does anyone have any other ideas?

I have Word 2013 on Windows 8 and it was working completely fine until Saturday when it just won't open. No boxes pop up, nothing. I just click on one my documents (or on the Word app), the little round thing near my mouse starts twirling (indicating it's beginning to load) and then it quits and nothing shows up. I restarted my computer but that didn't work.

My problem involves an older printer HP DeskJet 895Cse which was working fine until recently. I can save my word and excel docs as jpg files and they will print fine but if I want to just print them normally, they will feed the paper and sound as if printing but no data prints. Will look into some of your helpful hints and let you know if anything mends this recent problem.

Hi

I have discovered that excel 2013 has a serious memory management issue. If you have files that link to other files Xcel sometimes hangs or displays white space in the spread sheet.

Increasing the the Swop file size and monitoring the memory use-age using Windows Resource manager, you can actually predict when Xcel is about to give you the finger. As soon as Free space in Memory goes to below 100MB Xcel is preparing you for that OH NO moment as you watch hours of work go up in smoke. Hope this helps
Have a beautiful day

What fixed my installation was to disable animations in Control panel, then and most importantly, disable hardware graphics acceleration in Excel options. That last step stopped the "Excel has stopped working." Must be a graphics driver issue. Not sure why Excel needs to have accelerated graphics anyway unless it had to do with those worthless animations.

Many thanks, disabling the add-in did solve the problem

Since now a days Women & Men are more conscious of the food that they eat hence they prefer to have homemade low cal food and if you can start supplying low cal food to various offices then it will be a very good source of income and not too much of efforts. You can hire a few ladies who will help you out and this can be a good business.

Thus think over this concept and go ahead.

Ok, well after a couple of days trying to make my complex Business Excel sheet work on Win8.1 with Office2013 - I almost gave up.

When I open my file in Excel2013 it looks fine. A simple copy/paste and it crashes immediately. Even "Save As" crashes.

I tried all the above, but no luck.

Then I got an epiphony....

What is Excel doing at that time....calculating! and what's different? I used to have a quad core with 4 threads and now an Intel I7 with 8 threads....hmmm.

Solution: change the number of threats Excel can use from 8 to 4 and it works like a charm.

You can change this on File-Options-Advanced-Formulas.

How bizar.

Fantastic, Clement.
Not only did disabling add-ins re-enable Excel 2013 (32 bit/Windows 7 Ultimate) to print without having to save it to a pdf, but disabling the Semantria add-in also stopped an OLEObjects bug.
It never even dawned on me that the inability to print and the bug had started around the same time.
Excellent advice. Excel back to normal. Awesome!

Melissa Snell said...

Excel 2013 was constantly hanging on opening so I did the following:
1) under Excel options, de-selected show startup screen
2) Under Excel Options -> Advanced , ticked Disabled hardward acceleration
3) under Excel Options -> Add ins _. Manage COM Addins disabled the "dend to bluetooth" add in (I think this was the key one!)
4) Set the default printer to Microsoft XPs write
5) In Internet Explorer -> Options -> Security -> Local Intranet -> Sites untick the option to automatically detect Intranets

One or all of these has worked for the moment. I think it was the Bluetooth one that was really the key problem.

I'm going to put the others back one at a time and see when it breaks!

Thanks for the help

The second fix worked for me with Office 2013. I had just installed Epson Scanner/Printer L355 software which came with a software called ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint. This caused an add-in to MS Word, Excel and Outlook. After entering in "Safe Mode" I was able to uncheck them by clicking FILE/Options/Add-ins/Manage "Com add-ins". Thanks for solving my problem after about 5 hours of work.
God Bless,
Todd
